Overview

H&K Group, Inc. is seeking an experienced and motivated Safety Trainer. The Safety Trainer is responsible for developing and conducting all health, and safety training programs for employees, managers, and contractors. The primary goal is to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and foster a strong, proactive safety culture.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

I. Program Development and Planning
Needs Assessment:

    • Conduct regular training needs assessments in collaboration with training coordinator and safety management to identify skill gaps and compliance requirements (e.g., OSHA, MSHA, local regulations).
    • Review incident reports, audit findings, and regulatory updates to prioritize training topics.

Curriculum Design:

    • Develop comprehensive and engaging training materials, including presentations, manuals, job aids, assessments, and practical exercises, tailored to various departments and roles.
    • Ensure all training content is accurate, up-to-date, and meets mandatory regulatory standards.

Logistics:

    • Manage and maintain training facilities, equipment (e.g., PPE, simulators), and technology required for effective delivery.

 

II. Training Delivery and Facilitation

Effective Instruction:

    • Deliver dynamic and clear safety training using a variety of instructional techniques (e.g., lectures, hands-on demonstrations, group exercises, e-learning).
    • Facilitate discussions and practical application sessions to ensure trainees understand and can apply safety protocols.

Specialized Training:

    • Provide specialized training in high-risk areas such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, working at heights, chemical handling, and emergency response.
    • Train supervisors and managers on their specific safety responsibilities, including conducting inspections and incident investigations. This will require extensive knowledge on the current process.

Cultural Promotion:

    • Act as a safety advocate, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and hazard identification among all employees.

III. Assessment, Evaluation, and Documentation

Testing and Certification:

    • Develop and administer assessments (written, practical, verbal) to verify trainee competency and retention of safety knowledge.
    • Ensure all successful trainees receive appropriate certification or documentation of training completion. Work in line with training admin and training coordinator to ensure that the process is not missed.

Program Evaluation:

    • Collect feedback from trainees and managers to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and materials. Communicate with training coordinator to ensure any issues noted are addressed in a timely manner.
    • Modify and update training programs based on evaluation results, emerging risks, and changes in regulatory requirements.

Record Keeping:

    • Maintain meticulous records of all training activities, including attendee lists, dates, curriculum content, and assessment scores.
    • Ensure training records are readily accessible for audits and compliance checks.

IV. Compliance and Collaboration

Regulatory Compliance:

    • Stay current with all federal, state, and local HSE regulations and standards relevant to the organization.
    • Ensure the organization's training matrix is consistently followed to maintain a compliant workforce.

Internal Collaboration:

    • Work closely with internal or external adjunct trainers to ensure that H&K’s vision on successful training is maintained.
    • Collaborate with safety and operational leadership to integrate safety practices directly into standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Assist the Safety Training Coordinator in preparing for external regulatory inspections.

Qualifications

Preferred Skills, Education, and Experience

  • 5-10 years of experience in Safety related to construction and materials production industry
  • Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT) certification
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in occupational safety and health, environmental health and safety, or other relevant programs with a focus on health, safety and/or environment from an accredited educational institution
  • OSHA 500 Card for Construction Industry Outreach Trainer Authorization
  • OSHA 501 Card for General Industry Outreach Trainer Authorization
  • BCSP credentials such as STS-C, CHST, ASP, or CSP

Required Skills, Education, and Experience

  • At least 2 years of relevant health and safety experience in the heavy civil construction industry, general industry, or related industries regulated by OSHA
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing variables
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Ability to work well with a team and willingness to collaborate
  • Willingness to travel locally daily
  • Ability to meet physical requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to walk
  • Intermittently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Intermittently required to talk or hear in loud environments

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to heavy equipment/machinery, vibration, heights, fumes or airborne particulates, adverse weather conditions
  • Noise level is usually moderate
